Introduction

15 January to 16 February 2018: A great opportunity for volunteers to experience the hut warden role, apply their skills and learn from an experienced and knowledgeable ranger.

Blessed with a mild climate, golden beaches and lush coastal native bush, the Abel Tasman Coast Track has it all.

Dates

The roster runs from 15 January to 16 February 2018. Volunteers are required for 5 days (4 nights) on site, staring on a Monday and finishing on a Friday.

Description

The Anchorage Hut is situated in Anchorage Bay on the beautiful Abel Tasman Coast Track, a Great Walk situated in Abel Tasman National Park.

This Great Walk is one of the more popular in the South Island and draws large visitor numbers in summer. We have resident hut wardens are situated at Anchorage, Bark Bay, Awaroa and Whariwharangi Huts in the summer season and to a lesser extent during winter.

Anchorage Hut

Anchorage Hut is a 34-bunk hut with a campground that has 50 non-powered tent sites. The hut does not have cooking facilities or lighting, the campground has flush toilets, a cooking shelter (no cookers) and filtered water.

Tasks

The hut warden assistant's role involves assisting the resident hut warden with any jobs that require an 'extra set of hands'. Tasks may include:

  • basic maintenance, eg painting
  • basic track work (use of hand tools)
  • cleaning the hut and toilets, 
  • maintaining the campground
  • mowing lawns
  • clearing vegetation.

Having an assistant on site over the busy January – February period will be very helpful for the resident warden.

Location

Assistant hut wardens will be volunteering in Anchorage Bay where Anchorage hut and campground are situated. Anchorage Bay is 12.4 km along the Abel Tasman Coast Track from the small settlement of Marahau.

Anchorage has great facilities, but is also quite busy. It is especially busy in summer with pick-ups of kayaks and day walkers by water taxis and trampers staying in the hut and at the campsite. Anchorage Bay is a scheduled water taxi stop.

Assistant hut wardens can stay at the DOC staff house in Marahau and travel into Anchorage Bay each day with DOC staff. Marahau is a very small settlement, approximately 19 km from Motueka at the southern entrance of Abel Tasman National Park. Marahau has several cafes and a shop located at the Marahau beach camp. For groceries, it is best to shop at a supermarket in Motueka.

What to expect

Attributes and skills required:

  • fit and healthy
  • have a practical outlook and able to work alone
  • comfortable using hand tools, spade work, vegetation clearance, cleaning
  • mature, sensible and have a good attitude
  • able to relate to a range of people in a friendly manner
  • culturally sensitive
  • conversant in English
  • knowledge of the Abel Tasman Coast Track and surrounds is preferred, not essential
  • compliance with DOC Health and Safety Policy
  • first aid certificate is preferred, not essential
  • hepatitis A and B vaccinations advisable.

Police check: As part of the application for this role we may undertake a police check.

Volunteer fitness level: Medium – comfortably walk with 5 kg pack up to four hours over uneven ground. Volunteers will need to be fit enough to be able to carry out maintenance work described above.

Accommodation: Volunteers will need to arrange accommodation before and after their volunteer opportunity in the park.

Volunteers can stay at the DOC staff house each night which is situated in Marahau. The house has a fully equipped kitchen, shower/ toilet and basic bedrooms. The volunteer may have to share a room. DOC staff will transport the volunteer out to Anchorage Bay each day and return.

Or volunteers can stay on site in the Anchorage campground, but they will need to bring all their own camping gear. They can use the resident hut wardens staff quarters for showering and cooking.

Food: A food allowance of $20 per day will be reimbursed to the volunteer. Volunteers are asked to purchase their own food for their stay on site and provide a GST receipt (a supermarket receipt) is fine for this food. DOC can then reimburse food costs up to $20 per day while in the field.

Transport: Volunteers will need to arrange their own transport to and from Marahau. DOC staff will transport the volunteer and their gear on site and return via boat.

Training: Volunteers will receive a full induction before the start of their hut warden stint in the field. The induction will be held at Marahau and on site in Anchorage Bay and will cover how to carry out the duties assigned to them and a health and safety briefing.

Safety procedures: Approved volunteers must comply with the DOC health and safety policy and arrive prepared with appropriate amounts of food, clothing, and camping equipment.

Walking tramping tracks: The Abel Tasman Coast Track is well marked and signposted, but some sections may be steep and rough and the track can get muddy.

Wasps: Wasps are common in the park as well as sand flies. If you are allergic to these insects consider whether this role is suitable for you.

Weather: The climate is mild with sea breezes, summer droughts and some winter frosts. Rainfall averages 1800mm and the sun shines around 2200 hours per year. During late spring and throughout summer the coast is subject to strong westerly winds, while the autumn and winter months are generally calm. Temperatures in December average around 21 c down to 12 c and in January 23 c down to 12 c.

What to bring

Volunteer to supply as a minimum:

  • sleeping bag/ pillow
  • food
  • good quality wet weather gear
  • warm clothing
  • sun protection – hat, long sleeved light shirt
  • steel cap boots
  • insect repellent
  • personal medication/ toiletries including antihistamine
  • a day bag for carrying personal gear into the park each day
  • camp gear if wanting to camp on site at Anchorage Bay.

If you are confirmed as a camp host a full gear list will be emailed to you.

DOC will supply you with:

  • high vis vest
  • sun screen and hand sanitizer
  • leather gloves and rubber gloves
  • training, as outlined above.
