Stewart Island/Rakiura Conservation Management Strategy and Rakiura National Park Management Plan
The Stewart Island/Rakiura Conservation Management Strategy and the Rakiura National Park Management Plan were approved in February 2011.
These are legally separate planning documents, however they have been printed as one document as they were prepared at the same time.

Approved Conservation Management Strategy
The Stewart Island/Rakiura Conservation Management Strategy (CMS) was approved in February 2011.
It sets out DOC's proposed intentions for the integrated management of natural and physical resources located within the Stewart Island/Rakiura CMS area over the next 10 years.

Approved National Park Management Plan
The Rakiura National Park Management Plan was approved in February 2011.
It sets out objectives and policies for the effective management of the Rakiura National Park over the next 10 years.

Consultation process
- In September 2006 DOC advertised its intent to:
- prepare the first management plan for Rakiura National Park
- review the existing Stewart Island/Rakiura Conservation Management Strategy.
- DOC released a discussion document. Feedback indicated areas of interest and concern.
- Public workshops were held in 2007 and 2008 (Oban, Invercargill and Hamilton).
- 22 November 2008, DOC notified the first draft Rakiura National Park Management Plan and revised Stewart Island/Rakiura conservation Management Strategy.
- Submissions closed 11 March 2009 and nine hearings were held from June to August 2009 (Oban, Invercargill and Hamilton).
- February 2010, the Southland Conservation Board considered both planning documents and recommended them to the NZ Conservation Authority (NZCA) for approval (subject to agreed amendments).
- 14 April 2010, both planning documents were presented to the NZCA.
- February 2011, both documents were approved by the NZCA (subject to proof-reading and formatting).
