Cape Reinga and Herekino Forest are both found in the Kaitaia area. The Herekino Forest is home to many rare and threatened species, including the North Island brown kiwi, long-tailed bat and kauri snail.

Kauri Coast

Trounson Kauri Park and the Waipoua and Trounson Kauri forests are found in the Kauri Coast area. In Waipoua Forest you can walk to Tane Mahuta - the largest living kauri.

Whether spending the night at the Cape Brett Hut, kayaking out to Motuarohia/Roberton Island or hiking along the Omahuta Kauri Sanctuary Walk, the Bay of Islands area features a number of amazing outdoor opportunities.

Whangarei

Bream Islands and Ocean Beach, Whangarei Heads, Whangarei.

DOC conservation lands in Northland's Whangarei area include Tangihua Forest, Motutara Recreation area and more. Your explorations might include a walk on Piroa Falls Track or visiting Waro Limestone Scenic Reserve.

Auckland region

Tiritiri Matangi, Rangitoto and Great Barrier Island, in the beautiful Hauraki Gulf, are amongst the many beautiful and significant places to visit in the Auckland region.
